Located on a 266-acre site in Huntsville, Ala., the new $83 million Southeast Water Treatment Plant will soon be treating millions of gallons of drinking water daily for area residents and businesses.
Owned by Huntsville Utilities, the new greenfield plant will both expand the region’s water supply and relieve pressure from the utility’s two existing plants. The scope of the project includes a raw water intake structure, 42-inch raw water main pipelines, a conventional settling water treatment plant, and a 48-inch finished water main pipeline. Set for completion in 2018, the project incorporates high-spec concrete throughout the facility’s water tanks and the buildings. Kirkpatrick Concrete had to get 12 different concrete mixes approved for the project (versus a typical two to three per job), namely because its products are being used in so many different areas of the facility.
“We’re working on the tanks, the building, the elevated suspended slabs over the tanks, foundations, and exterior concrete,” said Spencer Glassco, Kirkpatrick’s Sales Manager – Northern Division.
“That’s a lot going on at one time, and many of those areas require different/unique mixes.” To date, Glassco said the project is going well and that Kirkpatrick’s portion of the plant is roughly 40 percent complete and on track to be finished on time.
Located on a 266-acre site near the intersection of Highway 431 and Guntersville Dam Road, the facility is expected to treat 12 million gallons of drinking water per day.
The project is being build by Brasfield & Gorrie which has a strong portfolio of water and wastewater facilities.
