FAQs for Homeowners

Do I really need a contractor?
Concrete may look like a simple product that just pours into place, but it really takes a lot of hard work to install properly. From setting up forms to compacting the soil, there's a lot of preparations to be made long before the ready mix truck ever arrives at your project. If placed improperly, you can quickly have a big mess on your hands that won't be easy to correct. You may be surprised to learn that one cubic yard of material tips the scale at nearly 4-thousand pounds. That means all forms must be properly shored-up to ensure dangerous "blow outs" won't occur. The ground around the site also needs to be compacted to make sure the slab is level and has proper structural support. For best results, you may want to consult a professional that's experienced in proper placement, finishing and maintenance of concrete.
I'm an experienced DIYer...any tips for me?
Placing your own concrete can be satisfying for the DIYer accustomed to project planning and sweat equity. Remember: concrete projects require correctly shored-up forms, accurate material estimating and proper finishing to be successful. The Portland Cement Association offers its classic in-depth guide to placing concrete: “Cement Mason’s Guide to Building Concrete Walks, Drives, Patios, and Steps” at many book retailers.
How can I estimate how much material I need?
Ready Mix Concrete is measured by cubic yards so it's sold by volume and weight. Getting a general idea of how much concrete you'll need for your project is a very important step to ensure your job is a success. Use our free ConcreteSouth Calc (see links below) app for Apple and Android devices to figure out the cubic yards you'll need.
